Abstract

Neutrons scattering is a unique and powerful tool to probe static and dynamic properties of condensed matter on a microscopic scale. The quality and precision of the neutron scattering measurement, determined by the available neutron flux, are limited even at the latest and most brilliant neutron source facilities. Neutron multilayer optics is one of the most important technologies for transporting, focusing, and polarizing a neutron beam and has intensively been studied to take best advantage of neutrons produced at the source. This is particularly relevant to spallation sources including the European Spallation Source (ESS), where a neutron beam with a wide wavelength range has to be transported to the instruments at a distance of more than 100 m.

A multilayer with a variation in the period thickness to extend the wavelength range of neutron reflection is called a neutron supermirror. We have developed neutron (polarizing) supermirrors by using the ion-beam sputtering technique to enhance the capabilities of the neutron scattering instruments at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). In this talk, our recent activities, mainly on the one aimed to the high-performance neutron polarizing supermirror, will be presented.
